The Suitcase

A writing competition for students

Hello there, I am Sophie and today I am catching a train to Southport. I was at the train station when I stumbled across a brown rugged suitcase. I am far too curious to just leave it there in the middle of the platform without knowing what is in it. So I opened it up and I discovered the secrets inside.

There was what seemed to be pictures of an old lady and man in black and white. I couldn’t just leave it there in the middle of the platform, after all, there is the general register office in Southport. So when no one was looking I sneaked the suitcase to myself and that was when my train turned up and I was off to Southport.

When I arrived in Southport I went straight to the general register office. I made an appointment and I was in at two o’clock. When I arrived at two o’clock they took me into a room and I discovered all about this couple and that was when the most amazing thing happened. I discovered that it was my great Aunt and Uncle who fought in the first world war. Even though my train back to New York was at five o’clock I wanted to stay and find out more about my Aunt and Uncle. Once I had found enough about my great Aunt and Uncle I went back to the train station and booked a new time to go back to New York.

When I was back in my home in New York, I found another magnificent discovery. I had found a locket with a picture of my Aunt and Uncle inside it and that is when I decided to go visit their grave in memory of them. And that is my story.
